Holmwood House

Holmwood House is the finest and most elaborate residential villa designed by the Scottish architect Alexander "Greek" Thomson. It is also rare in retaining much of its original interior decor, and being open to the public. A Category A listed building, the villa is located at 61–63 Netherlee Road, Cathcart, in the southern suburbs of Glasgow, and is owned by the National Trust for Scotland.

Holmwood is considered to be immensely influential by several architectural historians, because the design as published in Villa and Cottage Architecture: select examples of country and suburban residence recently erected in 1868[1] may have influenced Frank Lloyd Wright and other proto-modernist architects.

Washington Street School

 Washington Street school in the Anderston area of Glasgow, Its a C listed building currently on the at risk register.

Built in 1890 by H E Clifford the design is very similar to a number of schools built at this time, it was converted from  a school to an Arts Centre in late 1970s. 

The Griffin Pub

 The Griffin Bar, 226 Bath Street, is opposite the King's Theatre, and dates back to 1903. The carved wooden frontage also dates fro this time.

 

 

Balgray Tower

 A Glasgow oddity, situated in Springburn housing estate.

The castellated gothic turret and villa was built in 1820 by a wealthy tea merchant apparently

going by the name of Captain Breeze ,however on checking with British Listed Buildings  it would appear the  first owner was Duncan Mossfield.

The stone villa and turret are B listed.

 

The Darnley Sycamore

 According to legend Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley and Mary Stuart Queen of Scott's his cousin sat under this great sycamore tree when she nursed him back to health from an illness.

Darnley and Mary stayed at nearby Crookston castle.

The tree was damaged in the great storm of winter 2025,council tree surgeons  believe the tree will live on.
