The Drover





 There has been licensed premises here since at least 1845. John Ramsay a well known east end publican took over the pub in the middle of the 1870s. The premises were demolished and a new tenement and pub was built in 1912. The Date and the initials T. A, Thomas Aitken can be seen on the building. . The pub can be found at 447 Gallowgate Road.

Tenements and High Rise Flats

 

Glasgow is currently demolishing the majority of its high flats, due to poor construction, safety concerns, the cost of upgrading to meet modern standards, and the desire to replace aging structures with more modern and suitable housing.

National Piping Centre

 

The national Piping Centre at Cowcaddens promotes the study and history of the Highland bagpipe.

It has a collection of pipes that go back three hundred years, on display are pipes from around Europe.

The building was built in 1872,it was originally built as a church in the Italianate style.

South Fire Station










 A B McDonald, 1914-17. 2 large impressive linked 3-storey 11-bay rectangular blocks with courtyard buildings and hose tower in Free Renaissance style forming former Southern Fire Station. Predominantly red sandstone ashlar to ground floor and dressings and red brick to upper floors.

The fire station opened on the 27th October 1916. The E block contained the Watch Room and the Engine House where accommodation for 4 motor vehicles was provided as well as housing for the firemen on the ground floor. 

The S block was built to house firemen and their families, with provision for 36 families in identical apartments, all with their own kitchen and bathroom. This block now provides accommodation for homeless families.
